Rams News: Terrell Burgess Brings Much Needed Flexibility to LA’s Defense

The Rams wanted to address their defensive needs in this year’s NFL Draft, and Safety Terrell Burgess figures to be a big part of that.

On the latest episode of the ‘Rams Revealed Podcast’, Burgess talked about his style of play and what he is looking forward to in his rookie season. The former Utah standout doesn’t care where the Rams play him on defense, as long as he can be “in a position to make plays” for the team.

When asked what his favorite position to play was, his answer was what you would expect out of a kid trying to make it in the league.

“I’d say I’m a football player. I wouldn’t say that I’m best at any position but I do love to play in the box. I love to play in the box and being able to read lineman but I also like just being in a position to make plays.”

While there is some humbleness in this quote, there is a lot of truth as well, as Burgess excelled at multiple positions in college. From safety to linebacker, inside to outside, he truly did it all. This versatility will serve the Rams well as they search for a new defensive identity after multiple key losses this offseason.

The Rams’ scouting department clearly saw something in him, because they were ecstatic when they selected him with the  104th overall pick. The Rams’ Director of Draft Management, JW Jordan, praised him for the number of areas that he can impact.

“He’s a guy that can basically play anywhere on the backend that you need him to, whether it’s corner, safety, nickel. He can cover, he can run, he can tackle.”

Terrell Burgess is not only a great guy, but a very solid athlete. As he stated, he’s a football player. Wherever the Rams see fit to use his skills, the potential is there for him to be a weekly impact guy. Only time will tell how all of the draft picks from this year pan out, but Burgess has as good a shot as any of them to stick with the team.
