Rams: Is LA Confident in Rookie Cam Akers?

The Rams addressed many needs on their roster during the 2020 NFL Draft. One of the needs they addressed was another running back to replace the hole that was created by the release of Todd Gurley.

Fans were upset that the team “wasted” a pick on another running back when the Rams already have Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson. Brown is a veteran and is best suited for a backup role while Henderson is going into his second year in the league after being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft. Cam Akers was the man the Rams best saw to help ease the loss of Todd Gurley.

It’s what the Rams and general manager Les Snead saw in Cam Akers that made him a worthwhile selection for the team. During his time at Florida State, Akers rushed for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons behind a terrible offensive line. His physicality impressed the team showing he can take a hit and keep on going. To back that up, Akers ran for an average of 3.9 yards after contact which was the best in the draft.

Snead recently took to SiriusXM NFL Radio to talk about the team’s new addition.

“The thing that translates to the NFL is, he did a nice job – take all the stuff you said out of it, with the vision, patience, short-area quickness – to find daylight when there wasn’t a lot there, and that’s probably going to be more what he’s going to see in the NFL because there’s not a lot of space in this league.”

A duo of Cam Akers and Darrel Henderson will more than perform for the Rams in the upcoming seasons. While many fans weren’t happy with the choice, they shouldn’t be unsatisfied with it for long once they see the results start pouring in.
