After handing out some of the largest contracts in the NFL the past couple of seasons, the Rams find themselves thin in cap space.
After releasing Todd Gurley and Clay Matthews as well as trading away Brandin Cooks to allow breathing room, they still found themselves struggling with the still limited money they have to spend.
They started to get creative the other day as they worked with quarterback Jared Goff to restructure his four-year contract extension with $110 million guaranteed. By doing so the Rams created $7 million of cap space. They then reconstructed OT Rob Havenstein’s deal to free up an additional $1.56 million.
With the created cap space, they were able to complete their signings of linebacker Leonard Floyd and defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.
Both newcomers were signed by the Rams weeks ago but the deal wasn’t officially due to their incomplete physicals that the pandemic was causing.
Floyd joins the Rams after spending the last four seasons with the Chicago Bears. he figures to replace Dante Fowler on the edge. It’s also a small reunion for Floyd who played under the Rams’ new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Robinson has spent the past four seasons with the Detroit Lions. Robinson was supposed to replace Brockers after he was supposed to sign with the Baltimore Ravens. The signing fell through and he returned to the Rams. The two will likely share duties and work together to strengthen the defense.
