LA Roundup: MLBPA Submits New Proposal to Begin Season, Best Dodgers Face Masks for Sale, Rams Getting Much Needed Cap Relief, and More!
While most of LA’s teams are waiting for a return to action, the Kings have already begun their summer after a subpar season. They will not be joining the NHL as it hopes to jump into a playoff tournament to crown a champion, but it could end up benefiting LA. The Kings have not had a pick this high (5th worst record) since they picked Drew Doughty at number 2 in 2008. This pick could help turn around the franchise’s fortunes, as long as they make the smart decision and get a little lottery luck.
While the Kings are looking to add a player, the Rams finally have reason to celebrate the departure of one. Everyone knows that the Todd Gurley release was a salary dump meant to help the team stay afloat financially. And after months of waiting, the cap relief will finally take effect come Tuesday. The Rams are saving about $5.5 million with Gurley off the books and will look to sign their incoming rookie class with those savings.
The MLS has made progress towards a return to action, but talks reached a stopping point after the latest proposal. While the MLS Players Association (MLSPA) submitted a proposed plan for a return, the league has reportedly pushed back on it. There is still plenty of dialogue and hope, but time is running out if they want to capture a new audience.
One player that MLS fans can’t wait to see again is LAFC‘s, Bryce Duke. Duke is a young star in the making, a player that turned down the opportunity to play for Barcelona in order to make his dreams come true. While he was still in his rookie season and had yet to see much official playing time, Duke has impressed at all his stops so far. It takes guts to turn down FCB, but Los Angeles fans are sure glad he did.
In baseball news, things are still looking grim as far as a return to action. The MLB and MLBPA have been at odds for the better part of the shutdown, and there is no end in sight. The players union did submit a new proposal, one that is expected to be rejected right away by owners. Unfortunately, many fans are starting to see the less friendly side of the game. Ultimately, baseball is a giant business and operates largely on financial motives. While this may not sit right with fans, it is a harsh reality that is evident right now. We can only hope that cooler heads prevail and we can see the return of the sport we love.
