Lakers News: Mamba Sports Academy to Honor Kobe by Retiring His Namesake

The Mamba Sports Academy announced Tuesday morning that they would be honoring Kobe Bryant and his ‘Mamba’ nickname going forward.

Kobe Bryant and Sports Academy CEO Chad Faulkner launched the Academy back in 2018. Faulkner said that the facilities will go back to their original name, while moving the ‘Mamba’ aspect out of the name and into its own place.

“it’s more appropriate to put Kobe in another Hall of Fame, if you will, and to really respect a legacy that is really unrivaled, frankly, and let that live on its own. We will continue to do the work we do.”

The academy is rebranding, not to remove Kobe’s legacy from its history, but to give it new meaning. Kobe helped to transform the academy into something bigger than just a sports facility. He brought in NBA greats, held private workouts, and truly gave his all to make it what it is today. Faulkner acknowledged that he would love to build memorials for Kobe at both locations, with the Bryant family’s permission. The facilities will continue to operate in the fashion that Kobe envisioned, providing a home for men, women, and youth to come together for the sports they all love.

The new website for the Academy will be sportsacademy.us, and its social handle will be @sportsxacademy.

For a person that changed so many lives, it’s a perfect gesture to continue the work he started. The Mamba mentality will now forever reside in the rafters of the academy he helped raise.
