IOC Members Say 2020 Olympics Will Be Postponed

Look away sports fans, it’s only going to get worse and worse. The rumors surrounding the 2020 Olympics have been flying every which was as of late, amid the coronavirus pandemic that has the sports world in a shambles. From what it sounds like, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed and pushed off until next year.

Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics as of now, it’s not clear if this decision changes any of that. Given that we’re still eight years away from that, it seems unlikely.

The decision comes as questions around the COVID-19 virus swirl worldwide, and more countries lock down their borders. The Australian government just pulled their team out of the 2020 Olympics this week as well, one of many to do so in the wake of the pandemic. The source cited was Dick Pound, a Veteran International Olympic Committee member. He has this to say about the postponement.

On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.

Officially, Neither the IOC nor the Tokyo 2020 committee had announced a decision to postpone as of this week.
