MLB News: COVID-19 Could Cost Baseball A Ton of Money

The coronavirus pandemic that has swept across the globe has cost people more than just money. Lives have been taken and ways of life completely lost. The monetary aspect of the pandemic also cannot be overlooked. In the MLB in particular, we could be seeing one of the biggest hits to the league’s value in history.

According to TicketIQ, MLB could be facing a potential $2.5 billion loss in they cannot get games going until July. At this point, most experts have July first through fourth marked off on their calendars on potential start dates. With that in mind, it seems as though this number will be accurate when all is said and done. The loss of not playing games in just March and April alone amounts to close to a billion dollars in ticket sale losses.

The Dodgers would face one of the biggest losses of all teams with an $85 million loss in the first two months. Los Angeles could even face up to $200 million if MLB is suspended through the All-Star Break. The Dodgers alone would face the largest financial loss of any team in baseball if the season were completely called off, amounting to over $405 million.

With that in mind, let’s hope for the best in terms of MLB getting started soon. The Dodgers have not yet announced any refund plans for fans that already had tickets to games that have been postponed. Ticket holders are expecting some sort of response from the team this week.
