Dodgers Free Agency: Toronto Believes In Their Chances To Sign Hyun-Jin Ryu

Recently we wrote about an AL East team that heavily covets Los Angeles Dodgers free agent starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. Now that we know that team is the Toronto Blue Jays, some further reports are building about their overall seriousness in regards to the Korean Monster.

In short, the Blue Jays remain highly interested. Furthermore, Jon Morosi provides an update from the MLB Winter Meetings with the following tweet:

Morosi says that the Blue Jays believe Ryu is their best chance to sign a major starting pitcher among the available options. Still, Morosi says that Ryu is not close to making a decision.

While this should not come as a shock to many – the pieces could have been glued together weeks ago between the Blue Jays and their intrigue with Ryu.

First, many reports had Toronto talking about spending in upwards of $100 million this off-season if necessary. In addition, Toronto wanted not one but two starting pitchers of veteran classification. Then, one could figure that they were not going to land Gerrit Cole, Stephen Strasburg, or Zack Wheeler for obvious reasons. From there, Ryu is the biggest fish in the free agent pond; and perhaps where Toronto is spending most of their time for the last few weeks.

All of this – both the money Toronto can spend, coupled with their genuine interest in Ryu – could mean they are preparing a very large offer for free agent pitcher. Of course, it is these type of offers on the table that help get a player who is not close to making a decision a lot closer.

Finally, with some of the recent talk pertaining to the Dodgers and a Ryu reunion; they may have some heavy competition that drives up that price of the party.
