Clippers News: Lou Williams Talks Returning to Play and Thoughts on Social Injustice

The NBA season is set to resume in Orlando on July 30th. Clippers guard Lou Williams, among others, wants to make a statement for people to not forget about the social justice changes needed in the U.S.

Lou Williams was on CoStar to discuss the NBA’s return and how to balance the NBA season with social justice changes. Williams said:

“We don’t know what’s the right decision now,” Williams said. “We’re trying to figure that out on the fly like everybody else because we have a job to do, livelihoods. We have families to feed, and we’re also a majority of Black men at the same time. And so we’re trying to find that balance where if we do suit up, we’re having conversations behind closed doors.”

With the NBA in hiatus, more people have been paying attention to the news, protests, and situation in this country. When the NBA returns, chances are some, if not most of those people will turn their attention entirely to the NBA. Lou wants to make sure that even with the NBA returning, the focus remains on bringing change in this country. Williams said:

“If we do suit up, how much of this platform can we really use,” Williams said. Can we get a ‘Black Lives Matter’ patch on our jerseys? Can our jerseys say ‘Black Lives Matter’? Can the court say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ so we can use that platform to the best of our abilities?”

Lou has three days to decide whether he wants to play for an NBA championship, but at the same time being vocal about change, or entirely focus on bringing change in America. Williams said:

“It’s just hard to call, man. Honestly, it’s hard to call. I’m 50/50 right now, to be honest.”
