Chargers News: Bolts Hire Saints’ Joe Lombardi as Offensive Coordinator

After multiple reports that the Chargers were interested in hiring New Orleans Saints quarterback coach Joe Lombardi, the match between the two parties ended up becoming reality. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bolts have brought Lombardi on as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Lombardi, who is the grandson of Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, marks the third hiring with ties to Brandon Staley in the past. Lombardi was a coach at Dayton and Mercyhurst, both where Staley played quarterback.

Though that isn’t the main reason why Staley brought him aboard. Since 2016, Lombardi has been the quarterback coach for the Saints and has helped coach one of the best quarterbacks in history, former Chargers Drew Brees. The hope is that Lombardi can help create an even better offense centered around the potential of Justin Herbert.

Although Herbert showed great poise and talent throughout the season, he still has a lot to learn in the NFL. Who knows maybe the Chargers have the next Drew Brees on their hands. Hopefully, they don’t make the same mistake twice.
