Chargers: LA’s Defense Needs to Step it Up

Charger fans suffered another heart-shattering loss for the fourth time this year. This time fans watched as the Chargers’ defense allowed the New Orleans Saints to crawl back and tie the game not once, but twice. It ultimately lead to a Saints field goal in overtime that handed  Los Angeles yet another loss on the season.

The Chargers are 1-4 so far on the year with their 4 straight losses being decided by one score. Over the past four weeks, the defense has allowed 38 4th quarter points and 6 points in overtime compared to 45 points in the 1st half. Granted three of the four losses came from quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Dree Brees, they had the lead in each game heading into the final minutes before blowing it late.

Over the losing streak, head coach Anthony Lynn has been asked for his take on the situation.

“You go through ups and downs and peaks and valleys in games, but you have to be able to pull through, execute, and make the plays to win the damn game.”

The execution of closing out the games has been the biggest problem for the defense and can be traced back to last year. Since last season, the Chargers are 3-13 in games decided by one score. So far this year the defense has allowed the 5th most passing yards in the league (1,365 passing yards). Part of the reason the Chargers have done so poorly this year could be attributed to the injuries of key defensive players, but the team has to find a way to close out games if they have any hopes of salvaging the season.
