NFL News: Could We See Cam Newton In An LA Jersey Next Season?

Former Carolina Panther’s QB Cam Newton is the last big name on the free-agent market and plenty of teams could use his talent.

On March 17th, Newton was granted permission to seek a trade but that never came as he was released from the Panthers on March 24th, 2020. In his 8 seasons with the Panthers, Newton was named the NFL MVP in 2015, the same year the Panthers reached Super Bowl 50 but ultimately lost to the Denver Broncos 24-10.

Newton has been on the radar of many teams since he was released, but many believe teams won’t budge due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the 2020 NFL season up in the air, interested teams could hold off on making such a drastic signing decision.

The odds of Cam Newton playing in Los Angeles is just as good as any team hunting for an experienced QB. The Los Angeles Chargers could be a potential landing spot since veteran QB Philip Rivers is now with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Bolts already have experience in Tyrod Taylor and now newly drafted Justin Herbert so seeing Newton in a Charger jersey next season could be slim, but not completely out of the question.

During an interview, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn made a comment about the possibility of the Chargers and Newton:

“We’re looking at everybody, man, I want to turn over every single rock. So, yeah, we’re looking at everybody.”

The Los Angeles Rams seem set at QB with Jared Goff at the helm. The fact that he just restructured his contract in order to free up some funds in order for the Rams to sign players is a clear indication he’s not going anywhere for a while. Having Newton as a backup QB seems far fetched as he already stated that he will not be playing behind anyone.

According to Newton, there is “no way” he’ll be accepting a role as a backup QB and instead “continue to rehab and wait for the travel restrictions to life so teams can examine him.” Newton also stated that the worst-case scenario he’d “wait until a starter gets hurt.”

For him to be bold enough to come out and say that, it’s safe to say that seeing Newton in a Rams uniform is out of the question, but there’s still hope for the Chargers. Slim, but still existent. Don’t hold your breath.
