Chargers News: Anthony Lynn Opens Up About Quarterback Situation

The Chargers have an interesting situation on their hands if the NFL season does happen this year.

After Philip Rivers left the team via free agency, many believed the team would address the whole left behind by drafting a potential franchise quarterback. They did just that by selecting Oregon’s Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick.

With the expectations that Herbert will be the future of the franchise, he isn’t expected to take the job right away. At least not without competition.

The Chargers still have veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor who is expected to be the starter for the beginning of the season if it does happen. Head Coach Anthony Lynn mentioned he feels comfortable with Taylor leading the team and mentoring the new rookie in an interview with SI.com.

“We’re going into this thing: Day 1, Tyrod Taylor’s going to be starting it off. He’s earned that right. His teammates respect the hell out of him, he’s a leader on this football team.”

Lynn also mentioned the Herbert could push Taylor for the job if he competes well, though the whole Coronavirus pandemic could hurt Herbert’s chances of that early on. For now, the job is Taylor’s to lose, but how long will he be able to hold off Herbert?
